Head: The PC Gamer Quake II mod contest, sponsored by id Software, Activision, and 3Dfx.
Body: Here at PC Gamer, our inhuman Quake II skills have left us looking for a new challenge. What can we say? We dominate every deathmatch, and we're masters of Capture the Flag (just ask our neighbors at boot, who still wear our footprints on their foreheads). Before our godlike superiority takes all the fun out of Quake II, we're hoping you'll come to our rescue with some new mods for our favorite multi-player game. And just to sweeten the deal, we've come up with a little contest.
If you can create a team-based mod that truly enthralls the PC Gamer staff -- that inspires us to forego sleep, abandon friends and family, and commit any number of B-felonies for just another hour of play -- we'll give you $2,000. That's right -- two gees, baby. And we've got some other nifty prizes too. Check it out:
Here are how the prizes break down:
* Grand Prize Winner: Two thousand bucks (oh, yeah!), plus a copy of Quake II signed by the fine folks at id Software; a 3Dfx T-shirt, and a one-year subscription to PC Gamer.
* Second Place: A 3D Blaster Voodoo II 3D accelerator from 3Dfx and Creative Labs; a 3Dfx T-shirt and a one-year subscription to PC Gamer.
* Third Place: A 3Dfx backpack/duffel bag, a 3Dfx T-shirt; and a one-year subscription to PC Gamer.
* Fourth Place: A 3Dfx backpack/duffel bag; a 3Dfx T-shirt; and a one-year subscription to PC Gamer.
* Fifth Place: A 3Dfx T-shirt; a one-year subscription to PC Gamer; and a sexy Quake II hat.
* Sixth thru Tenth Place: A Quake II hat and a 3Dfx T-shirt.
* All top ten finalists will receive a jumbo Quake II promo box, a Quake II T-shirt, and a PC Gamer T-shirt, plus other goodies like PC Gamer bumper stickers and tattoos.
So get cracking, Sparky!
A bunch of rules and other legal crap.
1) The entry must be an all original, team-based modification. It can be similar in theme to CTF, Jailbreak, etc, but it must be a completely separate and unique modification. The entry cannot contain any copyrighted images and/or sounds that are not the property of the mod developer (i.e. Star Wars, Aliens, etc). Any entry that contains copyright protected material will be automatically disqualified.
2) The entry must contain a minimum of 2 original maps, created specifically for the mod.
3) The entry must be a final, fully playable product. Any entry that is full of bugs will be automatically disqualified. Similarly, if the mod submitted contains any computer virus or other kind of programming that could effect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this Contest, we reserve the right to disqualify any individual submission or cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest. Deliberately damaging a web site or attempting to undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest is a violation of law and could subject you to damages. Let's play fair, people.
4) Deadline for all entries will be 11:59PM, July 31, 1998. No entries will be reviewed until AFTER that date. Once a mod has been submitted to the judges, NO UPDATES will be accepted, even if the update is sent before the deadline. Make sure your entry is done and complete before sending it.
5) The entry cannot be a previously released mod--this includes any early betas that have been available for public download. (Announced projects that have not been released are exempt from this exclusion. So if you have a web site set-up with screen shots, but no files to download, you can enter.) Designers can utilize LIMITED public beta testing to work out game bugs, but any and all servers running the mod must be shut down July 31, 1998, and not re-established until authors receive the go-ahead from Imagine Media and/or PC Gamer magazine.
6) The Contest shall be judged by the editors of PC Gamer magazine, and the following criteria shall be used to determine the winner. To the right of each category are the percentages that will be used to determine the winner.
1) Originality and creative design--40%
2) Long term potential for expansion and continued playability--35%
3) Must be a fricking blast to play--25%
The decisions of the judges is final. All prizes will be awarded and no minimum number of entries is required. Prizes won by minors will be awarded to their parents or legal guardians. Imagine Media is not responsible for damages or expenses that the winners might incur as a result of the Contest or the receipt of a prize, and winners are responsible for income taxes based on the value of the prize received.
7) The Grand Prize winner agrees that only Imagine Media and/or PC Gamer can release the server side files for the winning mod (client side will be released ASAP). The mod will only be available on PC Gamer's dedicated Quake II server for a period of one month, beginning the day the winners are announced. All submissions become the property of Imagine Media and will not be returned. It is the intent of the PC Gamer editors to release all mods back into the Quake community at the conclusion of the contest, although there is no obligation for them to do so.
8) The maps must contain the following in some capacity: the PC Gamer/Imagine Media logos. These must be a natural part of the level design and not just pasted in somewhere.
9) Commercial companies that have designed and released retail modifications, total conversions, or similar product, are prohibited from participating in this contest. This exclusion does not apply to individuals or parties who have worked on a contractual basis creating/designing levels for companies, as long as they are not a full-time employee of said company.
10) Winners will be announced on or around August 25th, with the top three winners being notified by phone. The Grand Prize winning mod, and the two runners-up, will appear on the November PC Gamer disc. A list of winners may also be obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Imagine Media, Inc., c/o B. Harms, 150 North Hill Drive, Brisbane, CA 94005.
11) If more than one person works on the modification, the person who submits the mod will be the "leader" of that group. Any and all prizes will be sent to that person, and THEY will determine the distribution of any and all prizes to the other members. Any disputes that arise over the distribution of said prizes will be resolved by the group involved. PC Gamer magazine, its editors, Imagine Media, and the sponsors of this contest will not be responsible for any conflicts, nor act as mediator in such conflicts. If a conflict arises prior to end of the contest, Imagine Media reserves the right to disqualify that entry.
